Edge On The Edge?

So it was Edge leaving  the black roses last week after taking out key memebers of his entourage. Edge is coming apart at the seams due to the Hell In A Cell match Vicki put him in with the Undertaker.  By far the most exciting match up last week on Smackdown was Jeff Hardy and Shelton Benjamin. The most impressive display was Valdimir Koslov. He came out and demand better competition. That’s hardcore! So on to my Summer Slam predictions for this Sunday. It’s hard to predict Summer Slam, but I think I’m going to go with Undertaker over Edge, Jeff Hardy over MVP, Triple H over The Great Khali, and Batista over Cena with a heel turn bonus on that one, but we’ll see. I’ll let you know if I got it right on Monday or not.

Yawn

Smackdown was pretty dull this week. The one great match was Shelton Benjamin VS. Jeff Hardy, and that was exceptional match! Jeff Hardy may have broken his neck and I wouldn’t be surprised after two Swanton Bombs. I’m sure after Summer Slam things will get shaken up again.

Prediction Analysis

I made several predictions for Summer Slam in my Edge On The Edge post. Now that Summer Slam is over here are the results.

Jeff Hardy VS. MVP - Wrong

Triple H VS. The Great Khali - Right

Cena VS. Batista - Right

Edge VS. Undertaker - Right

So there you go not bad. Now everything will change and get set up for the next Pay Per View which, I think, is Unforgiven.

Smackdown Slump

I am not pleased with the replacement of Mick Foley by Tazz.  I hear  Mick Foley left because he didn’t like Vince McMahon talking into his headset all the time while he was calling matches. Oh well, I guess that’s how it’ll have to be from now on. The only good match this week was, again Shelton Benjamin, but this time with Fit Finlay. That was sepctacular. Everything else was mostly ho hum. They have Freddie Prinze Jr. on the writing team now, so I’m sure things will improve once they get some storylines going like the return of the Undertaker.

The Angry Undertaker

How mad was Undertaker at Vicky Guerrero this week? He was so mad that his lighting was powerful enough to catch the ring posts on fire!!! That’s serious. Seriously awesome! Big show was hilarious this week. He doesn’t usually have good mic skills, but this weeks oversight talk was really funny. As for matches there were two good ones. MVP VS. Jeff Hardy was insane! Triple H VS. Shelton Benjamin was pretty good too, but it was ruined by the ridiculous Great Khali. I hate monster type characters unless they can actually wrestle. Tazz was commentating yet again and now I know for sure I’m stuck with him because it seems TNA has acquired the services of Mick Foley. What a coup! TNA just gets better and better.

The Speech 2

Again, I waited a whole week for another monumental speech by Sting and he did not disappoint. This time he both praised and condemned the fans for the their behavior towards the Legends before being interrupted by Samoa Joe and Kevin Nash. Then at the very end after Jeff Jarret’s music was played and Sting called out Jeff Jarrett! Will we be seeing Jarret next week for the first time in over a year? Who knows. I’ll have to tune in to find out and I’m excited to do so. That’s the thing about TNA, I’m always excited to watch it unlike Smackdown. I only really watch Smackdown to find out what Triple H is going to do. I would love to have Triple H jump ship to TNA, but that’ll never happen seeing as how he’s married to the bosses daughter. I’m trying to figure out why I like TNA so much more than WWE now. Is it the great mix of old and new wrestlers? The fact that referees sometimes get into brawls with the wrestlers? The insane athleticism of people like A.J. Styles and The Motor City Machine Guns? Is it the quirky characters like Curry Man, Super Eric, and Shark Boy? Is it the six sided ring? It’s all of those things I suppose. In the middle to late nineties, the Stone Cold era, WWE was like that to. Once you thought they pushed as far as they could go they went farther. They had to compete with WCW, but they don’t see TNA as the same kind of threat even though it is. WWE needs to get it together. They need to get out of the for kids box they built around themselves and go back to how RAW was in the late nineties. Even if they don’t think they have to compete with TNA by doing that it would still make all the WWE shows way more exciting than they are now. Until they do that I’m just going to keep DVRing Smackdown and turning the two hour show into a thrity minute highlight reel of the weeks events with one or two good matches thrown in. That’s totally boring, but that’s how it is with the WWE now. Totally boring.

Why Koslov Why?

Vladimir Koslov had a brilliant showing in a handicap match against Funaki and Scotty Goldman. Then, of course, after breaking them down quickly he demanded better competition as usual. However, I did not like his actions after the fatal four way main event when he came out and beat on an already battered Jeff Hardy. I understand he wants better competition and beat down Hardy as a way of saying that Hardy is the challenge he’s looking for setting it up for a Koslov VS. Hardy match next week most likely, but this is not in Koslov’s character. It would have been much better had he just opened Smackdown next week with a vocal challenge to Hardy, which I’m sure Jeff would have happily accepted. I hope this is not the beginning of a heel turn for Koslov. I mean as far as I see Koslov now he’s a neutral character and I don’t want that to change.

The Fatal Four Way was a great match and I’m glad that Hardy won it setting him up ans the number one contender to take Triple H’s belt at No Mercy. It’s entirely possibly for Hard to become champion too. I can totally see that.

It was hilarious watching Triple H getting into the heads of the participants in the Fatal Four Way. They don’t call him The Cerebral Assassin for nothing!

In other news I think it awesome that when Smackdown moves to My Network TV in October that they will be playing Wrestlemania 25 on regular TV on October 2nd at 8 P.M. I’m definitely going to watch that.

Along those same lines I hear they might make WWE 24/7 On Demand a free Network channel and possibly take RAW off of USA if USA doesn’t want RAW anymore or if they don’t renew their contract. I can tell you that if this comes to pass it will be the sickest thing ever, period, in the history of mankind! It will also be very dangerous for me. I work at home and will have to exercise an untold amount of self control not to watch WWE24/7…well…24/7.

A Turn For The Worse

Koslov has done a heel turn for sure. It looked like it was going that way and it has. I don’t like it, but at least I can look forward to an eventual face tun by Koslov in the future. Jeff Hardy and Triple H had the best matches on Smackdown again this week. What a surprise. I do like the idea of Carlito tagging with his brother Primo and becoming champs. I’m looking forward to that next week. Carlitos new pants are cool too. I hope they become part of his new in ring gear. So anyway, next week I’ll be looking forward to Carlito and Primo wrestling  Curt Hawkings and Zach Ryder for the tag belts. I doubt they’ll turn they belts over, but they might. I’ll also be looking forward to Koslov VS. The Great Khali. I can’t stand The Great Khali so I hope Koslov beats him. On another note. The new two disc DVD set for Mr. Perfect Curt Henning looks awesome. I’m going to Netflix them. If you’ve never seen Mr. Perfect before you should definitely check that set out. He was one of the best.

Spread Out

I just finished watching Smackdown for this week. It was totally awesome. I nearly watched the full two hours this time. I know why it was so awesome. I knew it was going to be awesome when I first heard about the premiere show on My network TV. It was awesome because the best wrestlers weren’t spread out over three shows. They were all on one show so almost every match was a premium match. This is why TNA is so good. They don’t have three shows. They have one focused show every week with their best wrestlers and it totally rules. I wish the WWE would do this. I’m not saying just have RAW or whatever. I’m saying switch the wrestlers around between the shows. Have at least three premium matches each week with guys that don’t usually wrestle each other. That’s what WCW used to do with Nitro and Thunder. Some guys you’d see on one, but not the other. Some guys you’d see on both and then it would change the next week. It kept things fresh. The whole draft thing and people sticking to one shows makes it really boring. So, anyway, this week was awesome and I really appreciated it, but next week I expect more of the same and once again I’ll cut a two hour show down to 45 minutes on the DVR.

Upsetting

Fighting sports saw two giant upsets this weekend. The first being Jeff Hardy’s insane win over The Undertaker. It was crucial for Hardy to win this match over Taker in order to position himself once again as a contender for The Championship. If this wasn’t a factor the The Undertaker wouldn’t have lost because The Dead Man practically owns Smackdown and has been wrestling in the WWE since 1990 way way way back when they used to play WWF on Saturday mornings where I live. The second upset was Lesnar beating Couture for the UFC heavy weight title. Nobody i know including myself likes Lesnar and was rooting for Couture, Lesnar proved us all wrong and we all had to eat crow. That’s OK. Lesnar invested a lot into fighting in the UFC and he needs to make those investments back. The reason nobody liked Lesnar when he wrestled in the WWE and I suspect that the reason nobody likes him much in UFC is that he has no mic skills and no charisma. However, fighting is not a popularity contest it’s a contest of skill and Lesnar proves he has the skills to be earn the title, but not the charisma to hold it well. Luckily, working in the UFC is not as dependent on charm and mic skills as working in the WWE. So, bravo Brock Lesnar you earned the belt! Wear it proudly.
